Mazie

A few friends were talking today about the story of our Nativity and it really got me thinking about the story of our cat.  By the way, if you haven't heard already, she is going to be in next year's I Can Has Cheezburger calendar!  After her appearance in their How To Take  Over the World book, they liked the picture enough to add it to the calendar.  And after you read the story, the calendar will be even more exciting!

When Jason and I were dating, he go the idea to get me a cat for Valentine's Day.  At the time we thought it was going to be practice for having a kid (HAHA!!)  We went to a local animal shelter to find a cat to adopt.  The only thing we knew going in was that we didn't want a kitten since it would be more work (because when you are practicing for having kids, it's highly practical to get one that is already trained, right?)  They led us into a room full of cats and we started looking around.  We saw a few adorable ones and they let them out of their cages for us to pet.  Most of them just wandered around aimlessly.  Jason sat down in a chair next  to the cages to pet one of the cats.  As he was sitting there, a nearby cat reached out of it's cage and started to gently paw at him.  We thought it was funny, again because most of the other cats could care less that we were even there.  After a few more minutes of this, we asked to have that cat taken out for us to look at.  The cat immediately jumped on Jason's lap and cuddled up to him.  It was adorable!  Being that it was a Calico cat, he remembered something his grandmother had told him.  He was always very close to his grandma and
once she had told him that when she died she wanted to come back as a Calico cat.  Of course we chuckled and thought it was a sweet story.
After a few minutes of sitting there, the lady working there came back in and we asked her a little more about this friendly Calico cat.  She was fully de-clawed, so we figured she was someone's pet at one time.  The lady said that she showed up as a stray without any tags.  Without her background, they could only guess that she was 1.5-2 years old.  That is when Jason told me that his grandma had died almost exactly 1.5 years ago.  That was pretty much enough to seal the deal for us, we said we wanted her.  As she was picking her up to do whatever it is that they needed to do with her, we got a glance at the name-tag on her cage.  Mavis.  This was Jason's grandmother's name!  Seriously, how often do you run across the name Mavis?  Needless to say, she lives with us now :)  After talking to Jason's mom, we learned that his Grandpa's nickname for his Grandma was Mazie, so that is what we call her.

Back to the calendar......When the Cheezburger lady contacted me, she mentioned that the calendar was a page-a-day calendar so we could pick whatever date we wanted.  We chose the date that his grandmother passed away, which we consider to be Mazie's birth date. :)  So either next year or the following year, look for Mazie on the I Can Has Cheezburger daily calendar, on June 16th!

(BTW if you have never heard of I Can Has Cheezburger, check it out here and you can find Mazie's picture here)

Merry Christmas!!!
