It IS easy being green...what does Kermit the Frog know?

After a discussion on Facebook yesterday about homemade cleaning products, I thought I'd post some of the "recipes" I use for various things around the house. I already posted here about my recipes for homemade diaper cream and baby wipe solution. Here are some other baby recipes:

Baby Oil

1/4 C almond oil
10-15 drops essential oils (EO)

Baby wipe solution (I haven't used this since I really love my other recipe)
2 C water
1 TBSP baby shampoo
1 TBSP baby oil
I have not used this recipe but wanted to share it for those that may not want
to shop for ingredients, since these ingredients are very easy to find.

And here are some recipes for you, the tired mommy!

Pomegrante Sugar Scrub
1/2 C pomgrante seeds
1/2 C white sugar
2 tsp oil
1-2 drops EO (optional)
Combine sugar and seeds and crush with spoon. Add oil and mix. Add EO if you want.
Scrub gently on body

Avocado Hair Mask
Half of an avocado, mashed
1/4 C olive oil
1/4 C almond oil
Combine until a paste consistency. Put on hair, especially ends, and let it sit for 30 minutes

Honey Bath
1/2 C honey
1/2 C liquid soap
1 TBSP vanilla extract
Mix together and pour into bath. You can store this in a bottle, just shake it before using

And here are some household basics and cleaning recipes:

Hand soap
1 bar soap (6oz)
1 TBSP honey
1 tsp glycerin
Grate the bar of soap and put in blender. Add 1 C boiling water and whip. Add 1/2 C of
room temperature water and stir in blender. Add honey and glycerin. Stir. Let it sit
and cool for 15 minutes or so. You should have about 2 cups of soap. Add water until
it is between 5-6 cups. Put the soap into containers and let it cool before putting the
lids on. It does thicken after awhile and you will have to occassionally shake the bottle.
I made this with a basic antibacterial soap and I think that I would use an unscented
bar next time and add essential oils. The recipe says you can use herb-infused water
too, just strain it before using it.

Window cleaner (I LOVE this recipe and it cleans much better then Windex)
1/4 C vinegar
2 C water

All purpose cleaner (I cut this recipe in half and put in a spray bottle)
1/2 C Borax
1 Gallon of water

Toilet (another GREAT recipe!)
Sprinkle baking soda in toilet bowl
Add vinegar
Scrub to your heart's desire!!

Easy tip for cleaning counters
Cut a lemon in half
Dip the cut side in baking soda
Scrub the counters! The lemon makes it easy to hold/scrub and the mixture of lemon and
baking soda really does the trick. I usually rinse the counter off with a wet cloth after.

Carpet cleaner
I keep a small container full of baking soda and then add in drops of EO. I like rosemary.
Sprinkle on the carpet and let it sit for awhile, longer if you have pets or pukey babies :)
Vacuum! The great thing about this is the clean scent stays in your vacuum and you will
smell it again the next few times you vacuum. I also use this same baking soda/EO mixture
in my diaper pail, just sprinkle it in the bottom and it goes in the wash when I dump the
diapers in the washing machine.

I have collected these recipes from the internet and magazine so I have no idea where each of these came from. If you know of the site or magazine that these came from, let me know and I will give them credit for it. Just had to say that so I don't make anyone mad if I stole their recipe! Feel free to share your recipe in the comments or email me!

Baby food and purees

Now that my little guy has has almost every fruit/vegetable I can think of, I'm really enjoying making his foods and coming up with yummy combinations. I wanted to share some of the combinations he loves best and please comment if you have others that your baby loves!

Butternut squash and peaches, with a dash of cinnamon (his favorite right now!)

Chicken with potatoes, green beans, and carrots

Pasta with tomato sauce, green peppers, red peppers, and green beans

Broccoli & chicken with a handful of shredded cheddar

Oatmeal with pumpkin and cinnamon

All of the above are foods that are pureed. He is really into finger foods right now as well and so far we've tried:

Canned peaches or pears (light, not packed in syrup) diced. Super messy but worth it!

Steamed carrots and peas

Diced up chicken breast

Shredded cheese, also very messy but he loves it!

Black olives, diced

and he loves to suck on red and green peppers!

I'm also a sucker for the commercial convenience so he also really loves Baby Mum Mums, Snikiddy puffs, and the Gerber zesty tomato thingys that look like puff Cheetos.

I really need ideas though. As much as he loves the above foods, I feel like he's not getting a lot of variety. I've heard of making baby meatballs but don't have a recipe. If you have one, please share it with me!!!

Sunday recipe

Thanks to my aunt Rita for this yummy cookie recipe! I have not tried it yet but am very much looking forward to it!!

Carmel Apple Cookies
  • 3 1/3 c flour
  • 3/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 16 Tbs (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • 1 1/2 c packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 c granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 1 Tbs vanilla extract
  • 1 1/4 C Kraft Caramel bits (near chocolate chips in grocery store)
  • 1 1/2 c granny smith apple, small diced or grated
Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Whisk flour, baking soda, and salt together. Set aside. Beat butter and sugars using an electric mixer on medium speed for 2 minutes. Beat in the eggs, yolks, and vanilla until combined. Scrap sides as needed.

Reduce the mixer speed to low and slowly mix in the flour mixture until combined, about 30 seconds. Stir in the apple and caramel bits until evenly distributed.

Roll dough into large golf ball sized balls (a little less than 1/4 c of dough). Lay on parchment paper lined baking sheets, spaced about 2 inches apart. Bake until edges are golden but the centers are still soft and puffy, 15-20 minutes.

Let cookies cool on the baking sheets for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Halloween preview

It's hard to believe that in a couple of days it will be October already! I'm so excited because I love autumn and really love Halloween. M can't decide what she wants to be...originally she wanted to be Tom & Jerry (she'd be the cat, K would be the mouse.) That has changed several times though. We were at Toys R Us last night and saw the cutest costume for K.

Tell me that isn't the cutest monkey you've ever seen! Now M wants to be a giant banana. She's crazy. I am sure she will change her mind yet again though, so don't get too excited about seeing a picture of her in a banana costume! And here's one more, because he's so stinking cute...

And just a few hours later...

To my surprise, this is what I found when I went to check on my butterfly tonight (just a few hours after the other picture I posted today)

What a difference a day makes!

So here is my little butterfly today, 9-22-09. The cocoon has gone from green to black in just one day so I am guessing it won't be much longer. Here is my crappy picture, because I suck at taking pictures...

What's growing in my garden?

A few days ago I discovered that there was something growing in my garden, other then the raspberries I planted. I have a little butterfly ready to enter the world! I did a little research online and discovered that the little cocoon is home to a monarch butterfly. I check on every day and today I was surprised to see that I can now see the beautiful black & orange wings through the chrysalis. I don't know if the proper term is cocoon or chrysalis so I used them both, I figure the worst I can be is 50% wrong! Anyway, here is my little butterfly's progress so far:

This is the little guy on 9.12.09

And here he is again today, 9.21.09. It is a crappy picture because it focused on the raspberry instead of the cocoon/chrysalis :) But you can see the orange and black wings. Pretty cool, huh?

Diapers.com coupon codes

I'm going to share some coupon codes from Diapers.com. These are from an ad they sent me with an order so they are totally legitimate codes. These all expire 12/31/09 and are limited to one per household:

It has to be on diapers though (and unfortunately they don't consider cloth diapers to be in the diaper category.) Orders over $49.00 qualify for free shipping as well, but I think that is something they do every day. I ordered from them a couple weeks ago and no joke got my package the next day. It was free shipping and it was a huge box!

My new favorite diaper

I just recently sold 12 of my cloth diapers on Craigslist simply because I had too many. Sadly I still have about 20 diapers left after selling some, I think I may have been addicted to buying them. A little while back I won a gDiaper starter kit fromChelsea Said So. I have been in love with them ever since. They are great because they can be used a couple different ways. They are basically a soft cotton diaper cover, with a snap-in plastic liner. You can use regular old cloth inserts inside of the liner. You can also use the gDiaper flushable inserts. These are great for those that think they can't do cloth diapering because it's too "messy." You simply take the liner out and flush it away. You can compost the liner too (wet only of course) or you can throw it away and it breaks down very quickly. No mattter which insert you choose, these diapers are great because you can reuse the same diaper all day long (for the most part.) I've since bought 2 more diapers used so I have four. I am pretty confident that I can get by with just these four diapers, that's how great I think they are. Too bad I didn't realize this in the beginning...I could have bought 4 diapers instead of 30+! Check out the videos:

I don't understand why everyone doesn't use these (or really cloth diapers in general!) Ok, I do understand why some people don't but I am just amazed at how much money we have saved (even though I bought way too many diapers.) My next plan is to make some cloth inserts. I can make the inserts for roughly 50 cents a piece!

Sunday recipe

I'm sharing a dish that we made the other night, Peppery Beef Stir-Fry. It was soooooo good but it was a little spicy. I read in the comments that you could substitute paprika for the cayenne pepper. I made this without mushrooms (because Jason hates them) and the snow peas (because I could not find them in the grocery store.)

Ingredients:

  • 8 ounces uncooked linguine
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup reduced-sodium soy sauce
  • 1-1/2 pounds boneless beef sirloin steak, cut into thin strips
  • 2 tablespoons canola oil
  • 1/2 cup julienned green pepper
  • 1/2 cup julienned sweet red pepper
  • 2 to 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 cups fresh or frozen snow peas, thawed and halved
  • 2 cups sliced fresh mushrooms

Directions:

Cook linguine according to package directions; drain. In a small bowl, combine the cornstarch, pepper and cayenne. Stir in water and soy sauce until smooth; set aside.
In a large nonstick skillet or wok, stir-fry beef in hot oil for 4-5 minutes or until no longer pink. Using a slotted spoon, remove meat and set aside. Add the peppers and garlic; stir-fry for 1 minute. Add the snow peas and mushrooms; stir-fry for 2-3 minutes or until vegetables are crisp-tender.
Stir soy sauce mixture and add to vegetables. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened. Stir in beef and linguine; heat through. Yield: 6 servings.

Christmas Box Angel

**This post is also on Alexandria's website for those that follow it**

October 15th is slowly sneaking up on us and I am so not ready for another year of Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness day. I dread it because I know it is a sad day for so many people and I dread it because I always feel like we should be doing more then we are to remember Alexandria. But we remember her every day. This year we got an invitation to the Walk To Remember at Mercy. We always debate on whether or not we want to go. On one hand we feel like we should be there to remember her, on the other hand it is extremely depressing to be there. Like I said, we think about her every day so I often think that we are better off honoring her that day by spending the day together as a family. But...this year they are dedicating the Christmas Box Angel statue at Mercy, so I kind of want to be there. This statue is beautiful, to say the least.

From what I understand, this angel started in a book-turned-movie called 'The Christmas Box.' A mother mourns the loss of her only child at the base of the statue. It's rumored that the statue actually existed and was destroyed by mother nature, but nobody knows for sure. Much later the statue was commissioned by Richard Paul Evans and now many of them are showing up throughout the country. He felt it was needed for all of the parents silently mourning the loss of a child.
Last year a local group tried taking up donations to get one of these statues here and they were so close. We got an invitation to be at the dedication ceremony, and then later we were notified that they were unable to get it for one reason or another. But now Mercy is getting this statue and I think it's great. I must say that I am inspired to read this book and find this movie, although I can only imagine that I will need a box of Kleenex!
If you are interested in being there, please let me know. They typically do a service in the hospital chapel, followed by a walk, and then the dedication ceremony and reception.

Snikiddy Do Da!

So I wrote about these Snikiddy snacks in an early post. I bought some today and they are so good! I will probably be eating more then the kids :) I was surprised at how big the bags were. Most baby snacks come in these tiny little pouches for $2.79 or more. I got the pizza puffs and nacho cheese puffs. The bags say 4 oz but the puffs are virtually weightless so the bag is about the size of a bag of potatoe chips. They were $2.49 at Toys R Us and if you bought two you got a dollar off. Soooooooo, with the coupon I talked about below, I got two bags for $1.99. And my mom got a coupon too, so with hers we got 4 bags of these for around $4. And the coupon worked because I will go back and buy more at regular price!

My 9 month old approves also. He only has two bottom teeth and he has no problem eating these, even though he tends to shovel handfuls into his mouth.

I do have to say, in all fairness to Gerber, the Snikiddy snacks do have sugar in them too. They are 9th ingredient though, as opposed to the 2nd or 3rd ingredient. I totally love Gerber snacks too, you just have to look at the ingredients and choose wisely. For those with kids with allergies, these are free of wheat, gluten, hydrogenated oils, corn syrup, trans fats, and preservatives...and they are low in saturated fats. No, they did not pay me to write this, I seriously love these snacks! My only complaint is that they are only available at limited stores, so unless you live in a large city you would have to order online.

Extra Life - Play video games, help children!

Anyone who knows me or my husband knows how much he loves his video games! Finally! He can put his gaming to good use! From 8:00 a.m on October 17th until 8:00 a.m. on October 18 he will be playing video games (for 24 hours straight!) to raise money for Pediatric Cancer research, with donations going to Texas Children's Hospital. You can be part of this by donating to his team, TeamDarkAngelKain. Any amount helps! You can choose to donate per hour that he plays (ex. donate $1/hr which would add up to a $24 hour donation if he finishes out the whole 24 hours. The max is 24 hours, even if he plays longer then that.) Click on the image below to donate to his team, or you are welcome to join his team to play video games and raise donations! Video games are not limited to the Wii or Playstation 3, you can play solataire on your PC for 24 hours! We are very appreciative of any support we receive!!!

If you've been close to a child that has gone through treatment after treatment, you understand the physical and emotional pain these children go through. Jason grew up with a best friend who had pediatric cancer. He is now a healthy adult but Jason vividly remembers being by his friend's side, and we proudly support charities such as Extra Life and Make A Wish.

Remembering a legend

Just wanted to take a moment to an amazing actor that passed away today after battling pancreatic cancer. Rest in peace, Patrick Swayze

A few new tricks

So in the past week or so Mr. McScreamy has pulled a few new tricks from his sleeve. Nothing spectacular like walking or even crawling, but still exciting for a 9 month old. He now dances and sings. He only sings in the car though, and it seems as though Modest Mouse is his favorite so far. And his dancing is really more like head-banging (video below.) Also, just today, he has learned how to smack his lips. So it always sounds like he just finished up a nice, juicy steak. It's actually quite cute. He also knows what the word "kitty" means. He can't say it but when we say it he looks for the cat. He could care less about mama and dada (which he can actually say but doesn't know the meaning of) but he always has tabs on the cat.

"Sissy" got her first haircut this week (at age 5!) It doesn't look like much but there were quite a few inches on the ground. It makes her look a year older, at least. Doesn't she look enthused??

Happy Sunday!

Well, it's Sunday and that means that tomorrow is.....ugh...Monday. If you hate Mondays as much as I do, here's a little Sunday LOL cat humor to cheer you up!

Today I'm sharing a recipe I found at Taste Of Home for Beef & Spinach Lasagna. I have to admit that I had never had spinach before this recipe! It was really good, although next time I will add a little more garlic and/or other seasonings. Here it is!

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 jars (26 ounces each) meatless spaghetti sauce
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 package (10 ounces) frozen chopped spinach, thawed and squeezed dry
  • 2 cups ricotta cheese
  • 2 cups (8 ounces) shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese, divided
  • 9 no-cook lasagna noodles

Directions:

In a large skillet, cook beef and onion over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain. Stir in the spaghetti sauce, garlic, basil and oregano. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 10 minutes. In a large bowl, combine the spinach, ricotta and 1 cup mozzarella cheese until combined.
Spread 1-1/2 cups meat sauce into a greased 13-in. x 9-in. baking dish. Top with three noodles. Spread 1-1/2 cups sauce to edges of noodles. Top with half of the spinach mixture. Repeat layers. Top with remaining noodles, sauce and remaining mozzarella cheese.
Cover and bake at 375° for 30 minutes. Uncover; bake 10-15 minutes longer or until bubbly. Let stand for 10 minutes before cutting. Yield: 12 servings.

Finding healthy snacks for babies is hard!

Seriously, what are these kids supposed to snack on?? K is just now at the point where he really wants to feed himself, but only has two teeth so he doesn't have many options. He really likes Gerber puffs and stuff like that but if you read the ingredients, sugar is one of the top ingredients. Crazy. I did some searching online and found a snack that I can't wait to try. It's called Snikiddy and the products are all natural. If you go here and fill out the form, putting "babybix sample" in the comment form you will be emailed a coupon for a free package. Not a sample, a full-size package! I got my coupon but have not used it yet. I can't wait to try it. Check out the ingredients here ( click to enlarge it)

Even better, go to BabyBix and sign up to win an assortment of snacks from Snikiddy!!

Needs no explanation!

A friend posted this on Facebook and I was compelled to steal it for my blog. I don't like to be political on my blog as to not offend anyone, but this one I could not pass up. I find it really, really sad that parents were pulling their children out of school to avoid them hearing our President speak about staying in school. Isn't that kind of like telling your child that if they don't want to deal with something they should just run from it?? Anyway, enjoy!

A new giveaway to check out

Stop on over to Love To Shop Mom to check out the newest giveaway. This time, for a "My Pair Tree." I had never heard of this until I visited the site and I have to admit this is a pretty cool invention! I for one, have 30 million pairs of flip-flops and the pairs are never in the same spot. I want one! Click here to see contest rules and info. And this is what the "My Pair Tree" looks like

Under Construction

If you run into any issues with the site in the next few days, please continue to check back. I have a defect wherein I cannot leave things the way they are, so I am going to be working on redesigning my blog. I have very little skill when it comes to this stuff, so it may take me hours just to figure out how to change the background color, so bear with me!

McScreamy is at it again!

If you haven't been introduced to McScreamy, check out the post down below. Chances are if you live within a 100 mile radius of us you have already heard him...and of course those of you fortunate enough to hear him on the phone know what I'm saying. I don't know what his deal is, maybe he is teething or not feeling well, or maybe he is just getting smarter and realizing that it is fun to drive mommy crazy. He sleeps just fine. He eats well, to say the least. So I really don't think that he is sick, so I'm going with the thing about driving me crazy.

I feel kind of like I need to give you proof of this screaming. Not because I feel like people don't believe me, but because I feel like someone else has to endure the pain! So, for your listening pleasure......

But honestly this video doesn't do him justice. This is his quiet scream and the video camera takes away some of the pain. But you can see that he clearly wants you to believe that he is upset, but he is not. In the other video I took, you can see him smiling in between screams but that video is too huge to post. I think his bib should say "I'm a little smart@$$"

Get your tastebuds ready!

Today I have a recipe that I am sure you will love!! I tried this out last night and can't stop eating it! It's called Chocolate Chip Pumpkin cake. It may sound weird but it is so good, I can't wait to make it for Thanksgiving dinner! Again, it is from Taste of Home and you can find the recipe here. Here it is!

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup butter, softened
  • 1-1/2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 can (15 ounces) solid-pack pumpkin
  • 1 cup (6 ounces) semisweet chocolate chips
  • 2 ounces unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled
  • 3/4 cup finely chopped pecans, divided

Directions:

In a large bowl, cream butter and sugars until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in vanilla. Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda and cinnamon; add to the creamed mixture alternately with pumpkin. Fold in chocolate chips.
Divide batter in half. Stir melted chocolate into one portion. In a well-greased 10-in. fluted tube pan, sprinkle 1/2 cup pecans. Spoon chocolate batter over pecans; top with pumpkin batter. Sprinkle with remaining pecans.
Bake at 325° for 65-70 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool for 15 minutes before removing from pan to a wire rack. Yield: 12 servings.

I made mine in a regular old cake pan and it worked just fine and cooked thoroughly. It is (obviously) very rich, so make sure you have someone to share it with! Enjoy!

My LOL cat

2 posts in one day! Aren't you lucky! I posted earlier about the new book from I Can Has Cheezburger and it came yesterday! Woohoo! Most of the cats got their own page, including ours. This is our photo that was published and the caption used (the caption is spaced better in the book but it's the same wording):

when i ask for halp, i do not mean go get camera.

The book is hilarious, M had me read every single caption to her. And if you don't like cats, the site also has LOL Dogs, LOL Celebs, and the very popular Fail Blog. If you still haven't ordered the LOL Cats book, you can get it at Amazon or Barnes and Noble.

Introducing....

You've met Mc Dreamy.....

And certainly you've met McSteamy......

But I bet you have not been introduced to McScreamy.....

Awwww, what kind of mother would post a picture of her sweet little baby so upset?? I guess that would be me. But in all fairness, he is smiling 99% of the time so this photo is a rare find. But although he is always happy, he loves to scream. And I don't just mean a normal, every day scream....I mean scream-so-loud-my-ears-are-bleeding type of scream. And he just does it for fun, because he can.

Also, I just wanted to say that I really have no idea who McDreamy and McSteamy are. I don't even know what show(s) they are from. Hopefully Google didn't let me down and they are captioned correctly. If not, sorry but you can still enjoy the photos!

Thanks!

Thanks to everyone who wished us a happy anniversary! It was a nice, quiet evening, which is about the best we can expect for an anniversary at this point!! The kids weren't screaming, so we were happy!

So I have officially started Christmas shopping...woohoo! And by that, I mean I bought one small thing for M, but it's a start! She's all about musical instruments this year and her two of her top items are a drum set and a harmonica. I guess there won't be any more silence in this house. I did win a brand new harmonica from eBay for $2. The exact same one is at Toys R Us for $14.99. Now I'm in search of anything Hanna Montana. At least she got on the Hanna Montana bandwagon after it died down a little, so everything isn't outrageously priced. Anyway, I added a poll to the blog, I'm curious who else has started shopping!

Happy Anniversary...to us!!

6 years, wow time does fly! I've been scouring the internet for the perfect gift this year. It's so hard to find something that he doesn't already have. I mean, he has the perfect wife, what else is there? I joke. But anyway, the traditional gift for a 6th anniversary is candy while the modern gift is iron. Wow, those are pretty exciting. I try to incorporate the traditional and modern gifts into each anniversary. You have to have the sexy lingerie and a practical gift, right? How do you find gifts for a man that include sexy lingerie/practical item and that are made out of candy/iron? How, you ask? I'm glad you asked (and maybe you should be regretting that you asked.) I found the perfect gifts! First, the sexy lingerie (incorporating the traditional candy):

I just know he will love it, who wouldn't love a gumball machine?? And I am certain that he does not already have one! The pink hair is optional, but I really think it adds to the sexiness. (if you're brave, you can click on the photo to see it enlarged.)

Now, onto the practical gift, incorporating iron:

Look closely and you will see that it has a convenient headphone jack. Who wants to iron without some tunes? The handy USB port/cable are certain to entertain as well. See, ironing isn't just for women anymore!

So be honest, think he will like them???
